I have advanced level training in the epidemiology and genomics of substance use and related psychiatric disorders, and extensive research experience in neurocognitive markers of addiction. This has culminated in the interdisciplinary program of research I lead at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, examining the confluence of psycho-social risk, genetic, and neurodevelopmental factors for substance use and psychiatric disorders in diverse populations.  I have successfully obtained continuous funding for my research since the start of my career, including having received a K01 award (NIDA), NARSAD Early Investigator award (Brain and Behavior Foundation), and now having served as PI on multiple R01 grants from the NIH (NIAAA, NIDA and NIMH). In addition, I serve as Project Leader for the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA)’s Brain Function project, a national U10 study of individuals at high-risk for mental health and substance use disorders. I also have leadership roles in several collaborative research projects at the intersection of mental health and genomics, including the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (Substance Use Disorder-PTSD) and ENIGMA-EEG (Enhancing Neuro Imagining Genetics through Meta-Analysis—EEG working group).  I have published research on social and genomic influences on substance use disorders (including genome-wide association studies, and the first study of polygenic risk score x trauma in substance use disorders), longitudinal trajectories, neural connectivity and related aspects of brain functioning in high-impact journals (Molecular Psychiatry, JAACAP, JAMA Psychiatry).
